The Reading Shoulder Unit, an international centre of excellence, investigates and treats patients with all types of disorders of the shoulder. The unit is recognised worldwide, treating patients locally, nationally and internationally.
The Reading Shoulder Unit was founded in 1998 by two leading orthopaedic surgeons; Mr Stephen Copeland and Professor Ofer Levy.
Since 2020 the Reading Shoulder unit is based at the Berkshire Independent Hospital.
The Reading Shoulder Unit team includes:
Prof. Ofer Levy, Mr Giuseppe Sforza and Mr Paolo Consigliere.
The Reading Shoulder unit is the world centre for shoulder resurfacing and stemless reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.
Both the shoulder resurfacing "The Copeland Shoulder" replacement, and the unique 'Verso shoulder', a stemless bone preserving reverse shoulder replacement were developed in the unit by Mr Copeland and Professor Levy.
Prof. Levy and the Reading Shoulder Unit has also pioneered and developed many arthroscopic instruments and arthroscopic surgical techniques.
Patients from around the world are coming to be treated and operated by Prof. Levy and the unit team.
Surgeons from across the globe are regularly visiting Prof. Levy in order to learn new surgical techniques and improve their skills.
The Reading Shoulder Unit has introduced the concept of 'One-stop clinic' for diagnosis and treatment of shoulder problems by performing an ultrasound scan of the shoulder at consultation, saving the patient time and discomfort and initiating treatment without delay.
The Unit has produced standardised rehabilitation protocols in conjunction with specialist shoulder physiotherapists. These protocols are currently being adopted by other hospitals and physiotherapists worldwide.
Professor Ofer Levy and his team provide the patients the highest standards of care that make the Reading Shoulder Unit worthy of its reputation as an international centre of excellence for shoulder surgery.
