Gastric Band

What is a gastric band?

Gastric band surgery, also known as gastric banding or lap banding, is known as restrictive weight loss surgery as it limits the amount of food you can eat at one time. After the surgery, you will feel fuller sooner and stay satisfied for longer, which in turn decreases your food and calorie intake.

It is a weight loss surgery option that helps overweight and obese people to change their eating habits and lose weight and improve overall health.

A gastric band is a soft and adjustable silicone band that is placed around the top of the stomach making an egg timer shape. This causes food passage restriction.

Phil Chatfield: Life-Changing Weight Loss Surgery

Patient Background
At the time of my surgery, I was approaching my 46th birthday and weighed 28.5 stone. I was in full-time employment, but I had no hobbies or interests and felt constantly drained. Chronic health issues like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes were beginning to catch up with me. I knew that if I didn’t make a drastic change, my life expectancy would be severely impacted.

Initial Consultation and Support
My journey began with an initial consultation with Consultant Bariatric Surgeon, Mr Bilal Alkhaffaf. He instantly put me at ease and thoroughly explained the sleeve gastrectomy procedure. His professionalism and empathy reassured me that I was making the right decision. He introduced the support team, including bariatric nurse Maria Semedo and dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine, and ensured I would have access to all the resources I would need pre-surgery, during and post-surgery.

The Decision to Undergo Surgery
I’ve struggled with obesity my entire life, I've always been massively overweight even when I was a teenager. Traditional weight loss methods had failed me, and my health conditions were worsening. I've always described myself with reference to food as the equivalent to a drug addict. I realised that surgery was my best chance to save my life and after researching my options and meeting my surgeon, I decided that sleeve gastrectomy was the most straightforward and effective solution for me.
