Dr. Downs joined Exeter Medical with considerable experience spending seventeen years as a Consultant Dermatologist, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians; plus a Member of the British, European and American Dermatology Societies. He is recognised as a national dermoscopy and laser expert (the art of skin lesion and skin cancer diagnosis) and recently published Exeter Medical’s diagnostic accuracy rates in the European Journal of Dermatology as a benchmark to others.
Testament to Dr. Downs’ position as a leader in his field, doctors training to become Dermatologists in the South West of England gain experience from him as part of their core training. He also trains and teaches other doctors and consultants to diagnose skin cancers and surgically treat them; in addition to contributing to clinical research – particularly in psoriasis and skin cancer.
Dr. Downs was also instrumental in developing a national network of community based specialist dermatology clinics as clinical director. He added:
“This national NHS service continues to grow and over 1,000 patients a week referred by GPs are seen and treated by my dermatology specialists. Benefits include lowering waiting lists, saving NHS money and delivering a high quality service. Spin- offs have been establishing NHS telemedicine services and a private patient Skype consultation service”.
Working from Admiral House three days a week, Dr Downs is available to see patients either directly by calling Exeter Medical on 01392 350057 or via referral from a GP. Exeter Medical is also happy to receive photographs (using the web form at the bottom of this link) from potential patients to check if Dr. Downs is able to help and also to receive quotes for surgical procedures.
