Improve your eye health through your diet

Through eating a heart-healthy diet, did you know you can improve your eye health? This is because the eyes are vascular, therefore a diet that is low in trans and saturated fat keep the blood vessels that supply the eyes healthy.

Age related macular degeneration, cataracts and other eye conditions can be reduced by supplementing your diet with food which is high in antioxidants, vitamin C, beta carotene and zinc. With this in mind the following foods can boost your eye health

Spinach –“It’s not just good for Popeye”, spinach is particularly rich in lutein, which is known to increase the density of pigment in the macula, protecting the retina and reducing the risk of macular degeneration.

Carrots – Whilst the age old saying “Eat you carrots they will help you see in the dark”, may be a myth, they are actually beneficial for overall vision. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which the human body converts into Vitamin A, an essential nutrient for good vision and healthy eyes.

Eggs – as with spinach, these are high in lutein; egg yolk also contains zeaxanthin, another antioxidant which is believed to help protect the eyes from sun damage.

Salmon – rich in omega-3, salmon helps protect against dry eyes, macular degeneration and cataracts.

Berries – high in vitamin C and bioflavonoids, citrus fruit can help maintain connective tissue, including collagen around the cornea. Vitamin C also promotes health in the delicate capillaries around the retina.
