Pinehill Hospital Pioneer Sustainable Alternative to Single Use Plastic Bags

Ramsay Cares is our approach to sustainability, it's a programme with three key pillars:

  • Healthier people
  • Stronger communities
  • A thriving planet.

We work as a team to ensure we do everything we can to acheive these goals, whilst following our philosophy of 'people caring for people'.

Colleagues at Pinehill Hospital have recently shown they are leading the way with these effots after they have pioneered a more sustainable alternative to single use plastic bags used for patient discharges, that will soon be rolled out across all Ramsay hospitals.

Pine Hill colleagues contacted the Procurement team asking for help to find a better product than the plastic bags we currently use. Procurement identified a sugarcane-based HDPE (high-density polyethylene) bag, which have higher abrasion and tear resistance, higher tensile and shear strength, and are 100% recyclable.

Another significant advantage of sugarcane plastic is that the process of growing the raw material for the bags removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which helps the environment. Sugarcane plastics can be processed by a normal recycling facility without releasing the captured carbon dioxide within the sugar into the environment.

This is just one of the initiatives Ramsay is doing to ensure we operate sustainably and reach our global ambition of being net zero by 2040.
