Hip and Knee Surgery Prehabilitation Programme

This programme has been put together to help you prepare for your surgery and improve your recovery. We know surgery causes a lot of stress, physically and mentally, which can have a major impact on your body. It is important to prepare your body for this.

Preparing properly for your surgery will:

  • Reduce your hospital stay
  • Reduce the risk of complications
  • Speed up your recovery

There are a number of risk factors that can have a negative impact on the way our bodies cope with stress, including;

  • Physical activity
  • Malnourishment
  • Smoking
  • Increased alcohol consumption
  • Frailty

Our programme has been designed to help you identify your individual risks and to support you to make lifestyle changes. We know that lifestyle changes can have a significant impact in just 4-6 weeks, and our programme aims to work with you at least 4 weeks prior to your surgery.

You will receive your Prehabilitation information on your Pre-Assessment appointment with the nurse. If you wish to receive this information sooner, please contact our department and we will arrange it for you.

The programme is divided into two sections: the educational and physical activity.

The Educational Section

The educational session will cover topics that hope to help you prepare for your surgery and support you to make lifestyle changes enable you get the most out of your surgery. Additional resources are available for you to print out, please view them here.

The Physical Activity Section

This will consist of a guided approach to help you increase your physical activity levels, both cardiovascular and muscle strength fitness. The physiotherapy team have pre-recorded some exercise sessions, please click here to access the exercise sessions

Participating in the programme will not delay your surgery and will compliment any of your current treatments.
