Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) uses laser technology to treat open-angle glaucoma and cular hypertension.
The laser uses mild heat to target specific cells in the drainage channels around your iris, improving the flow of fluid from your eye.
Glaucoma is a common problem, causing damage to the optic nerve where it leaves you eye. It usually affects people over the age of 40. SLT can be performed to reduce that pressure in your eye to slow down further damage.
The aim of SLT is to reduce the pressure in your eye, slowing down further damage to the optic nerve. It will not improve your vision.
SLT can be used on its own or at the same time as other treatments. It is not permanent, but the procedure can be repeated if the pressure increases again.
SLT is usually performed using local anaesthetic given as eye drops. You may also be given eye drops to reduce the pressure in your eye for a short time.
The procedure usually takes 1 to 2 minutes for one eye. If necessary both eyes can be treated during the same procedure.
For the procedure you will sit in front of a machine similar to those used to examine your eyes. Your surgeon will place a small lens on the surface of your eye. They will then use a laser to treat the drainage channels in your eye/s.
After the procedure you will be transferred to the recovery area.
You should be able to go home after about 30 minutes.
The cost of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty will be advised to you following a consultation with your Ophthalmologist. You will receive a formal quotation price for your Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty procedure.
If you decide to pay for your treatment, Ramsay offer an all-inclusive Total Care package, where a single one-off payment at a pre-agreed price, delivering direct access to all the treatment you need for complete reassurance. You can also spread the cost of your treatment with finance options available.
