My name is Katie Bailey, and I want to share my journey of undergoing a sleeve gastrectomy, a decision that has transformed my life in more ways than I could have imagined.
For years, I struggled with my weight, feeling out of breath even while doing simple tasks such as climbing the stairs. I also had knee and hip discomfort due to the excess weight I was carrying. I tried various diets and weight loss plans, but nothing provided a sustainable solution. Knowing that my BMI was only increasing, I realised I needed a more effective approach. That’s when I started researching surgical weight loss options and came across Woodland Hospital.
I initially explored the possibility of undergoing weight loss surgery through the NHS but was faced with a three-year waiting period. I couldn’t afford to wait that long, so I decided to fund the procedure myself, with financial help from my parents.
I discovered Woodland Hospital, which is part of Ramsay Health Care UK through my research and felt confident that this was the right place for me. The hospital had an excellent reputation, and I was particularly drawn to Mr. Chris Sutton as my surgeon. I appreciated his extensive credentials, and upon meeting him, I felt reassured. He was warm, kind, and confident. He explained everything in a way that was easy to understand and was patient with all my questions. From the very first consultation, I knew I was in good hands and was able to discuss upcoming surgery dates and availability with me which was a relief from the NHS timeframes I was faced with.
The support I received from the whole team was incredible. I built a great relationship with Shelby, weight loss co-ordinator for Ramsay Health Care who was my initial point of contact. Shelby was kind and reassured me with any concerns and nervousness I felt, she answered any questions I had, and I never felt pressured or rushed into making a decision to proceed to surgery. In addition, the medical staff at Woodland Hospital ensured I was fully informed and supported every step of the way in preparation for my surgery.
When the day of surgery arrived, I was both nervous and excited, but the team made me feel completely at ease. Recovery was smoother than I anticipated. I was encouraged to start moving early on, and I vividly remember the moment I stood up and felt like a new person. It was an emotional and liberating experience to know that I had taken control of my health and future.
Since my surgery, my life has changed dramatically. I have lost weight, and my hobbies have become more varied now that I have the energy and confidence to enjoy them, I enjoy reformer Pilates and socialising with my friends. Activities that once felt impossible, like exercising and playing with my children, are now a regular and enjoyable part of my life. The best feeling is knowing that my health has improved significantly, and I no longer experience the discomfort I once did.
If you’re thinking about having weight loss surgery, my advice is simple: go for it! Do your research, explore different options, and choose what feels right for you. While the idea of surgery may seem daunting, I can assure you that you will be well looked after.
The aftercare at Woodland Hospital was exceptional. The specialist nurse, Emma was always available to help, and the dietician also provided excellent guidance. Any questions or concerns I had were addressed promptly, which made the entire experience feel even more reassuring.
Choosing to undergo sleeve gastrectomy was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It has not only improved my physical health but has also given me a new sense of confidence and joy. I am incredibly grateful to everyone involved for their professionalism and support throughout this journey.
If you are considering weight loss surgery, I hope my story gives you the encouragement you need to take that first step toward a healthier and happier life.
