This is my story of how physiotherapy at Ashtead Hospital helped me reclaim my active lifestyle and achieve a personal milestone. From a life-altering injury to competing at the British Indoor Rowing Championships, this journey highlights the incredible care and support I received.
Patient Background
In June 2023, I sustained a complex fracture of my tibial plateau after a freak accident involving electric fence tape and a horse. The injury was severe, requiring fixation surgery and a 10-day stay at St Helier Hospital. After being discharged, I was faced with a daunting prognosis and minimal NHS physiotherapy, which left me feeling uncertain about my future. At 66 years old, I feared my active life was over. I decided to transfer my care to Ashtead Hospital and see Mr Craik privately. That decision marked the turning point in my journey.
Choosing Ashtead Hospital
I was referred to Ashtead Hospital for physiotherapy by Mr Craik after my surgery. Initially, I was sceptical due to past experiences with physiotherapy, which I had found tedious and uninspiring. However, I knew I needed expert help to regain my mobility and independence. From my very first session with Hussain, my physiotherapist, I realised I was in the right place.
Initial Consultation and Support
Hussain instantly put me at ease, challenging my mindset and encouraging me to focus on what I could do rather than what I couldn’t. His approach was transformative, combining technical expertise with unwavering support. He set achievable goals between sessions and motivated me to push my boundaries. This approach not only improved my physical strength but also helped me overcome the mental barriers that had built up since my injury.
Progress and Achievements
At my 16-week follow-up with Mr Craik, he was astonished by my progress. I performed a full squat to the floor—something over 90% of people with my type of fracture cannot achieve. Inspired by Hussain’s guidance, I now do about 100 squats a day with weights. Walking up and down hills, once deemed problematic, became part of my recovery routine, thanks to Hussain’s tailored exercises. I’ve even returned to horse riding, reaching this milestone just six months after surgery.
Competing Again
On Saturday, 7th December, I competed in the British Indoor Rowing Championships and became the second-fastest woman in the country in my age category. Hussain’s training techniques played a crucial role in my preparation. As I rowed, I could almost hear his voice encouraging me to push harder. I dedicate this achievement to him and the incredible care I received at Ashtead Hospital.
Reflection and Gratitude
Hussain, what can I say. You are utterly amazing. Not only did you help me push the physical boundaries, but more importantly the mental restraints that I had taken onboard. On Saturday I could almost hear you saying go on you can do this!! I have trained using the exercises you taught me.
I dedicate this medal to you and will never be able to thank you enough. I am going back for gold next year so if you fancy training me to just get those extra few seconds!!
Thank you seems inadequate for the inspiration and transformation.
Advice for Others
If you’re facing a challenging recovery, I wholeheartedly recommend seeking support from the expert team at Ashtead Hospital. With the right care, determination, and guidance, you can achieve more than you ever thought possible.
I’m now looking ahead to next year’s rowing championships, determined to go for gold. Thanks to Hussain and the team at Ashtead, I have every confidence that I’ll get there!
