Academic Background

Dr Paddy Clarke qualified at Liverpool University in 1987. Having spent time training in Liverpool, Southwest and Midlands Regions, he became Assistant Professor at Stanford University.

Between 1997 and 2013, Dr Clarke was a Consultant in Pain Management at The Gloucester Royal Hospital.

Dr Clarke specialises in interventional pain, pain management and chronic pain, supporting a holistic approach to the management of pain. “Pain is complex and can be influenced by many factors. It is caused by actual physical tissue damage but can be significantly influenced by mood difficulties and external stress. It is crucial to assess all these factors.”

Dr Clarke says "The single most important consideration is to make a diagnosis. This will involve talking to and examining the patient and organising any investigations that may be deemed necessary.

Once a diagnosis is made and a holistic assessment undertaken then a tailored approach to managing the clinical situation can be planned."

This may involve interventional treatments such as injections, alongside medication adjustments and physical rehab for example physiotherapy. If the mood has been affected, then input may be needed via psychological therapy.

Dr Clarke is strongly of the opinion that with a holistic and tailored approach, pain can be improved and managed. He performs many interventional procedures for a variety of pain conditions.
