I qualified as an orthopaedic surgeon in 1995. During the course of my training I was awarded the University Gold Medal in General Surgery. I undertook specialist training in the Sheffield (North Trent) Orthopaedic rotation. My higher surgical training comprised of two fellowships ie Spinal Surgery Fellowship at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the prestigious National Spinal Fellowship at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. This was combined neurosurgical and orthopaedic spinal training. I was appointed as a substantive consultant spinal surgeon at The Salford Royal Foundation Trust (Major trauma centre) and The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in 2013. As a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at a large tertiary referral centre, I routinely deal with many problems and procedures which are considered complex and rare in other centres. I have a wide practice in spinal surgery undertaking complex procedures in all areas of the spine (cervical, thoracic and lumbar). This comprises of varied pathological conditions including paediatric and adult deformity. I am a member of many spinal societies including the AO Spine Society and I am on their faculty for education. I am also the clinical governance lead for complex spinal surgery at Salford Royal Foundation Trust. I am keen on continuous quality improvement in spinal surgery to ensure the best functional outcomes for my patients. I confidentially enter all patient data on to the British Spine Registry and Spinetango to assess my patient outcomes. This gives me a valuable self-audit tool to constantly improve my practise.
