Mr Sakthivel is a consultant Urological surgeon working with the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough since March 2013. Prior to this he was a consultant urological surgeon working in a large Tertiary care hospital in Chennai, India from 2008 to 2013, performing all major urological procedures including renal transplantation. Prior to this, he has had a broad and in depth training in Urology both in India and in the UK. He has a subspecialist interests in endourology and lithotripsy and specialises in endoscopic and percutaneous surgery for kidney stones and tumors (including radiological access to the kidney). He manages all complex endourological work including urinary stones in patients with spinal injuries and spinal deformities. He has introduced the mini PCNL procedure and tubeless PCNL to the Trust which enables early discharge of patients following major endoscopic stone surgery. He is also proficient in surgery for BPH including HOLEP (Holmium laser enucleation of prostate). He also sees and operates on patients with a wide variety of general urological conditions and performs complex kidney operations. He contributes to national audits, research trials involving kidney stones and is the Principal Investigator for the PUrE trial comparing different treatment modalities for lower calyceal renal stones. He is also the Audit and Mortality & Morbidity lead for the department.
