Having completed his medical degree at Nottingham University, John undertook specialist surgical training in the East Midlands at the Trent Oesophago-Gastric Unit and the East Midlands Bariatric and Metabolic Institute. He subsequently completed a fellowship at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in advanced cancer, bariatric and benign upper GI surgery, before taking up his consultant post in Manchester.
John has a PhD in the field of oesophago-gastric cancer and is an accomplished academic. He has won a number of prizes throughout his career including the Royal College of Surgeons Research Fellowship, The Leonardo Da Vinci Prize and The Moynihan Medal.
As well as weight loss surgery (bariatrics), John specialises in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery for the treatment of conditions affecting the upper gastrointestinal tract. This includes oesophagogastric cancer, and benign disorders such as acid reflux, hiatus hernia, achalasia and gallstones.
