Mr. Mark Foster is a fellowship-trained consultant hand and plastic surgeon with extensive experience in managing complex hand trauma and upper extremity injuries.
Mr Foster regularly performs procedures such as carpal tunnel decompression, ganglion excision, trigger finger and trigger thumb release, Dupuytren's contracture and revision Dupuytren’s procedures, as well as scar revision and excision of skin lesions on the upper limb. His expertise spans from treating acute hand injuries to advanced reconstructive surgeries, with a strong focus on restoring function and improving the quality of life for his patients.

In addition to his clinical role, Mr. Foster holds significant leadership positions within UHB. As Clinical Service Lead for Day Surgery, he has been instrumental in improving patient pathways, operationalising new surgical centres, and ensuring excellence in theatre utilisation. His leadership style prioritises compassionate care, collaborative teamwork, and innovation, aiming to improve patient outcomes and experiences across the surgical pathway.
Mr. Foster is also a dedicated academic and researcher, with a particular interest in trauma physiology and clinical trials. He has developed a robust research infrastructure that integrates prospective data collection into clinical practice. His research focuses on the immune-endocrine response to trauma, and he has led multiple clinical trials, including a prominent study investigating Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) supplementation in trauma patients. Mr. Foster believes research should be embedded within all aspects of healthcare delivery, and he works to foster a research-aware culture across multidisciplinary teams.
A passionate educator, Mr. Foster is committed to mentoring the next generation of surgeons and healthcare professionals. He regularly lectures at the University of Birmingham and provides hands-on teaching to trainees at all levels. He advocates for the development of diverse and inclusive teams, empowering individuals to be creative and innovative in their contributions to patient care.
Throughout his career, Mr. Foster has been recognised for his clinical and academic contributions, holding fellowship positions with the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG). He is also an active member of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH).
