Following his UK based training, Mr Ward underwent further training in Robotic Head and Neck Surgery in Philadelphia, USA, and spent a year working at the world renowned Queensland Head and Neck and Skull Base Unit in Brisbane, Australia. In addition to his cancer work, Mr Ward is one of the highest volume thyroid and parathyroid surgeons in the UK. He is an advocate of innovation in surgery, and is one of only a handful of surgeons in the UK with extensive experience of continuous intraoperative nerve monitoring, parathyroid autofluoresence, and rapid access parathyroid hormone monitoring. Mr Ward also has experience in facial reanimation surgery and was recently featured on BBC news with the extended team in Portsmouth.
I have an interest in medical academia. I believe that research is vital to push forward the boundaries of medical science, and strive to improve patient outcomes. My interest was first sparked when I undertook my intercalated BSc, and my dissertation, “The effect of Simvastatin on the Stability of Carotid Atherosclerotic Plaques”, was awarded the Altounyan prize for the best BSc project. During my registrar training in ENT I spent two years investigating prognostic markers in HPV related Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
This work has led to a number of national and international presentations, several publications, and I was also awarded the prize for “Best Clinical Paper” at the International Academy of Oral Oncology meeting in Rhodes, Greece, in 2013. I submitted my thesis “Identifying prognostic markers in Oropharyngeal Carcinoma” to the University of Southampton, and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine in July 2015.
