He was subsequently appointed to the South West Thames Higher Surgical Training Programme, during which time he undertook a period of research both at St George's and St Mark's Hospitals, London investigating the chemoprevention of colorectal cancer via the prevention of colorectal polyps; this work was subsequently awarded a MD thesis.
His sub-specialty training in colorectal surgery, with an interest in minimally invasive and laparoscopic techniques, including a post-CCT laparoscopic fellowship, was spent at Frimley Park Hospital and Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford.
