Mr Oliver Old is a leading Consultant Surgeon, with expertise in minimally invasive (‘keyhole' or ‘laparoscopic') surgery and Bariatric (weight loss) surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass procedures. He offers face to face and virtual clinic appointments at The Winfield Hospital in Gloucester.
Mr Old specialises in treating gallstones, hernias, gastro-oesophageal reflux (acid reflux), hiatus hernias, Barrett's oesophagus, and is the Clinical Lead in Gloucestershire for Bariatric (weight loss) surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, and a member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society, the Association of Upper GI Surgery, and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and metabolic disorders.
Outside of work he enjoys spending time with his family in the Cotswolds. To support his interests in the treatment of obesity, he has also qualified as a Personal Trainer, to help provide informed diet and exercise advice to his patients. Mr Old has a strong background in research, and this provides the core basis for offering the latest evidence-based treatments. He leads a research team with a particular focus on the use of new technologies to diagnose oesophageal cancer at an early stage.
He is also involved in collaborative research investigating the latest treatments for obesity. He has been awarded funding for this research from Cancer Research UK, The Royal College of Surgeons, and the Clinical Research Network, and developed collaborations with the University of Exeter and the University of Gloucestershire. Mr Old graduated with Honours in Medicine from the University of Birmingham, and holds a degree in Neuroscience. He completed his surgical training in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, including specialist Fellowships at internationally renowned centres in Melbourne and Auckland, covering all aspects of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Mr Old has published papers on gallstone disease, hernias, Barrett's oesophagus, oesophageal and gastric cancers, and weight loss surgery.
He was awarded a Research Fellowship from The Royal College of Surgeons of England to study Barrett's oesophagus and received a research doctorate (Doctor of Medicine) from the University of Exeter for this work.
