Mr Steve Bale is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in conditions affecting the shoulder. In addition to arthroscopic day case surgery for impingement, instability, rotator cuff disease, sports injuries, dislocations, fractures, and frozen shoulder.
His main interest is in arthritis of the shoulder and performs shoulder replacement surgery for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and rotator cuff related degenerative disease. His research interests revolve mainly around the surgical management of glenoid deficiency in arthroplasty surgery and prosthetic joint infection.
Professional Memberships
He has travelled widely to share shoulder surgery experience in Europe, the US, South America and Australia and introduced arthroscopic shoulder surgery into Preston and Chorley.
He is a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and treasurer and founder member of the North West Upper Limb Group. He is a regular panel member for international shoulder courses and active in research and post-graduate orthopaedic training.
He has been Programme Director for training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in the North West Deanery and sat on the Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialist Advisory Committee with liaison duties in the Northern Ireland, East of Scotland and the Defence Medical training programmes. He was BOTA National trainer of the Year in 2013 and has also been an Intercollegiate Examiner for FRCS(Orth) for ten years.
He has served on the Council of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and chaired the Committee responsible for delivering the BESS Instructional Courses. He is currently the Fellowship Director for Wrightington Upper Limb Unit.
Academic Background
He obtained his medical degrees from St Andrews University (1983) and Manchester Medical School (1986). His post-graduate training was in the North West region, initially as registrar and subsequently as University Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery.
He was Sir Harry Platt Research Fellow in 1994 and took up Consultant appointment in Preston in 1996 to develop shoulder surgery. He moved to Wrightington in 2013.
