Mr Black's particular clinical interest within vascular surgery is venous disease. He has published articles, in peer reviewed journals, regularly on these subjects and in particular has developed a interest in the treatment of patients who have suffered from Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). He specialises in varicose vein treatments including EVLT, VNUS, microfoam and surgery and uses duplex ultrasound to accurately define the source and details of the varicose veins.

Mr Black graduated from WITS medical school in Johannesburg in 1998 and after two years working in Pietermaritzburg in Natal he moved to the UK in 2001. He spent two years at St Mary's Hospital and Imperial College performing research under the supervision of Lord Darzi and John Wolfe into training surgeons using virtual reality and simulation. The focus of this work was on improving the safety and efficacy of surgical training for which he was awarded a Doctorate in 2009. Following this, he completed his vascular training holding posts as a registrar at Ashford and St Peters Hospital, Frimley Park Hospital, Guys and St Thomas Hospital and St George's Hospital. He was first appointed as a consultant in 2010. He was awarded the fellowship of the European Board of Vascular Surgery in 2011. Mr Black's main NHS appointment is at Guys and St Thomas' Hospital where he moved in 2014. He has developed and led the Deep Venous Reconstruction service at St Thomas' offering intervention for patients with acute and chronic DVT. This quickly grew to become one of the largest such practices in Europe. He is currently the Clinical Lead for Vascular Surgery and the R&D Co-Lead for Research in the Cardiovascular Divsion of Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital and has also been appointed as a Reader in Venous Surgery at Kings College, London.
