Academic Background

Mr Patel qualified from Cambridge University and completed his postgraduate training in Ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He was a clinical research fellow at Moorfields and at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

As one of the lead investigators for the world's first randomised trial of Avastin for age-related macular degeneration he won the Moorfields Research Medal for his work now published in the British Medical Journal. He also has a research interest in novel therapies for retinal disease and in multi-modal imaging including optical coherence tomography scanning (OCT).

Mr Patel was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital where he is the lead consultant for Medical Retina clinical trials and retinal imaging. In partnership with Moorfields Eye Hospital, he set up the age-related macular degeneration treatment service at the Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust in Harlow and is the lead consultant for this service.
