Boston West’s Theatre Healthcare Assistant (HCA), Stefanie is eternally grateful to the Management team at the Hospital for the opportunity and encouragement to do her apprenticeship. She is enjoying every moment and thrives on gaining valuable knowledge that she can put into practice in the workplace and, that helps her to understand why she performs the jobs within her role.
Stefanie returned to Boston West Hospital as a Theatre HCA after taking a break to be at home and look after her family. She was then presented with the chance to do a vocational qualification that would support her Theatre HCA role. Initially unsure, Stefanie travelled to Ramsay HQ in London for an induction to the course and, there and then decided that she did want to and could do it.
So, she commenced the Level 3 Peri-operative Support Diploma with Hertfordshire College in May last year as well as Level 2 English and Maths courses, and she has never looked back!
“This course ignited my desire to learn. It has helped me realise that I have the potential and drive to succeed in my studies. I am lucky to have Ramsay’s support for this training and the allocation of hours to do the research and work required". Stefanie said.
She continued “Matron and my Head of Department have been very encouraging and I’ve been fortunate to work alongside and gain the mentoring from a colleague studying for her Level 5 Associate Practitioner.”
This Peri-operative Support Apprenticeship provides its students with the knowledge and skills needed to work in operating theatre departments and enables them to offer vital assistance in the care of patients before and after their operation, checking equipment and keeping the operating area clean.
Stefanie has enjoyed all of the course so far. She was particularly interested in the physiological measurements module that looked at the daily monitoring of patients and recognising the signs of ill health early.
Other modules are wide and varied and include: promoting person centred approaches in health and social care, promoting and implementing health and safety in health and social care, assisting in the delivery of perioperative care and support to individuals and, assisting in the delivery of perioperative care and support to individuals.
The final and additional module will enable Stefanie to be able to be part of the scrub team once she has completed the full course and qualified. This is a real bonus as normally only registered nurses can be part of this team.
The modules are delivered through an online portal offering excellent resources and tutor access. Stefanie will complete the course in August this year.
“Thank you, Boston West for broadening my outlook. The course has also given me additional skills and confidence such as computer work and travelling to meetings. I hope to go on and study further as and when the opportunities arise.” concluded Stefanie.
