Lauren O’Toole is a final year student nurse undertaking an apprenticeship within Ramsay Health Care. This is her advice for anyone thinking about undertaking this course, she goes into detail explaining what a day in life of an apprentice student nurse is really like. 

My role here at the Decontamination unit as the Manager is critical to the patents and their families, I feel that our patients/ families should feel safe in the knowledge that we work hard here at the Decontamination unit to ensure we attain high standards and practices at all times.

People are at the heart of everything we do at Ramsay and part of my role is to ensure that we maintain high levels of quality throughout our units via quality assurance, audit compliance, infection prevention control to name but a few, to ensure our patients have safe surgical outcomes. 

My role is to ensure that our sites and equipment are compliant, to process the equipment used by our hospitals.

My role is to manage the Hub and ensure that all the different departments work together in sync to reach the end goal, which is that the Instrumentation is fit for purpose for the patients. 

We are completely behind the scenes and out of the limelight, but the work we do is vital in the context of infection prevention and successful outcomes of surgical procedures.

Without Sterile Services drivers moving surgical equipment between hospitals and Sterile Services, the hospitals would cease to do operations in a matter of days, and this would not only affect hospital staff but patients as well. 

I am responsible for resolving problems with instruments, setting up new trays & supplimentaries, and liaising with our theatre departments, to make sure the equipment they need is sent out to them in a timely manner.
