Mr Alan Desmond is a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Torquay, Devon specialising in inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr Alan Desmond treats patients with a broad range of recent-onset and long-standing problems affecting their stomach and bowel. He has particular expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), heartburn, reflux oesophagitis, Barrett’s oesophagus and patients with irritable bowel syndrome and other functional disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract.
Alan works in close collaboration with clinical dieticians who have specific expertise in the dietary management of gastro-intestinal disorders. Alan performs gastroscopies and colonoscopies on-site at Mount Stuart Hospital and works to ensure that waiting times for these important tests are kept as short as possible.

Alan graduated from the School of Medicine of University College Cork in Ireland in 2001. He went on to complete his specialist training in Ireland and at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. He relocated to Devon in June of 2012.
Alan has a strong track record in clinical research and has published several influential papers on medical imaging in chronic gastro-intestinal disorders. During his time at the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre in Ireland, he collaborated on several research papers in the fields of inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
