Mr Cottam is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at New Hall Hospital and specialises in surgical and non-operative treatment of all back and neck conditions. His practice concentrates on minimally invasive techniques where possible and he believes in a multi disciplinary approach, he works closely with physiotherapists, radiologists and pain specialists.
Mr Cottam performs the full range of spinal operations including injections, vertebroplasty, cervical disc replacement and fusions, lumbar decompression and fusion and, microdiscectomy.

Mr Cottam grew up in Dorset and studied medicine at the University of Nottingham. He completed his basic surgical training at Queens Medical Centre. He moved back to the south coast to undertake his orthopaedic training in the Wessex region before obtaining his FRCS in 2017, winning the Gauvain Research prize in in the same year.
His spinal training has taken place across the world with fellowship training in both adult and paediatric spinal surgery at world renowned centres in Australia, the USA, Southampton and Frimley. After completing a prestigious fellowship at Westmead Children’s Hospital and the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Mr Cottam returned to the UK and took his first consultant appointment at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
He returned to University Hospital Southampton in 2021 where his practice is now split equally between complex adult and paediatric spinal surgery. As part of his role at Southampton, Mr Cottam participates in the regional on call and looks after patients from the Wessex region with emergency spinal problems and specialises in all aspects of spinal surgery including complex degeneration, deformity, tumour and trauma.
