Gastric Sleeve

What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is a type of weight loss surgery that can provide dramatic weight loss results.

It’s a restrictive procedure where the capacity of your stomach is reduced by about 75% in order to aid substantial long-term weight loss. As a result, this should help your overall health improve.

It can be performed as a single procedure for weight loss, or it can be the first step before other weight loss surgical procedures, such as gastric bypass.

Phil Chatfield: Life-Changing Weight Loss Surgery

Patient Background
At the time of my surgery, I was approaching my 46th birthday and weighed 28.5 stone. I was in full-time employment, but I had no hobbies or interests and felt constantly drained. Chronic health issues like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes were beginning to catch up with me. I knew that if I didn’t make a drastic change, my life expectancy would be severely impacted.

Initial Consultation and Support
My journey began with an initial consultation with Consultant Bariatric Surgeon, Mr Bilal Alkhaffaf. He instantly put me at ease and thoroughly explained the sleeve gastrectomy procedure. His professionalism and empathy reassured me that I was making the right decision. He introduced the support team, including bariatric nurse Maria Semedo and dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine, and ensured I would have access to all the resources I would need pre-surgery, during and post-surgery.

The Decision to Undergo Surgery
I’ve struggled with obesity my entire life, I've always been massively overweight even when I was a teenager. Traditional weight loss methods had failed me, and my health conditions were worsening. I've always described myself with reference to food as the equivalent to a drug addict. I realised that surgery was my best chance to save my life and after researching my options and meeting my surgeon, I decided that sleeve gastrectomy was the most straightforward and effective solution for me.
